One of my friends asked me would I cover dancing as an article on this blog and my response was simple, "NO".
Needless to say my friend is a dancer and felt a little offended after asking me why not, I responded "Dancing is not a sport." I decided to sit down one on one with dancer Angel Cooper to see what her feelings were on whether dancing was a sport or not. After getting situated I read two definitions to Angel,1 being the definition of SPORT :is commonly defined as an organized, competitive and skill full psychical activity requiring commitment and fair play. The 2nd definition was DANCE: is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music. Both definitions were courtesy of wikipedia.com.
Angels is 22years old and has been dancing for 18years and is fluent in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, liturgical,African and point. Angel began doing ballet at the tender age of 3, and at age 8 she began doing modern,African, and jazz as well as continuing on with ballet. Angel began to travel with an ensemble, which gave her an opportunity to see places outside of her hometown,Baltimore,MD. The ensemble traveled the east coast throughout the DMV(D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area, as well as New York,North Carolina and Ohio. Between the ages of 8-13,Angel danced with Morton Street Dance Center and through the ages of 13-17 she performed with Duke Ellington Perforamance Arts School 5 days a week from 2p-7p. While attending Duke Ellington, Angel managed to keep her grades up and still stay committed to dance. Today, she dances more than 3 days a week and when asked how psychical dance was, she gave the following response. "Dance is so much more psychical and when in the gym you are working your isolated muscles, whereas when you are dancing you are doing straight cardio and weight building."
As the interview was coming to a close, I had to get to the bottom of Dance being considered a sport. Angel had a lot to say about the final question and if I quoted it all, this article would be 5 pages long, so I shortened her response. "Movement of the body is definitely a sport and its organized and competitive because of the competitions with other dancers as well as within yourself. You compete with social life because when you are a full fledged dancer your life has to shut down and you began making sacrifices for your love of dancing. In short based on your two definitions, DANCE IS A SPORT and your definition incorporated the word "Generally"."
I guess we will always have our opinions and based on those of Angel, dancing is a SPORT...my opinion will always be my opinion but I'm always open to change.
